Junior high unbeatens to meet at Haskell

Two city junior highs are unbeaten in ninth-grade football this fall and they’ll collide tonight.

South (6-0) and Southwest (6-0) will meet for the mythical city junior high championship at 6:30 p.m. at Haskell Stadium.

In a separate ceremony, South Junior High officials will dedicate a new sign in honor of the late Ralph Wedd at 5:15 p.m. at the SJHS field.

Wedd coached the Cougars from 1968 until 1984. His son, Dirk Wedd, is Lawrence High’s football coach.

LHS grad Medlen KCAC player of week

Leavenworth Lawrence High graduate Chris Medlen was named KCAC Player of the Week on Wednesday.

Medlen, a 6-foot, 190-pound senior wide receiver, had 13 receptions for 236 yards and three touchdowns in last Saturday’s 33-26 victory against McPherson. He set school records for most receptions and yards in a game. Fellow LHS grad Adrian Romero, a defensive end, had 11 tackles and three sacks in the win.
