Chargers’ defense depleted

? The San Diego Chargers were missing three Pro Bowl defenders Wednesday when they began practicing for Sunday’s home game against the high-scoring Kansas City Chiefs.

Linebacker Junior Seau (sprained ankle), strong safety Rodney Harrison (groin) and end Marcellus Wiley (groin) sat out practice.

Of the three, Seau is probably the farthest along, coach Marty Schottenheimer said.

Seau missed last Sunday’s 26-9 loss at Denver, the Chargers’ first defeat in five games. He was listed as probable on the injury report, the same as he was last week.

“I think he’s closer to being ready than he was a week ago, certainly,” Schottenheimer said.

Seau wasn’t letting on.

“I’m feeling sore,” he said. “You want to be out with the guys. It’s like I’m sitting here, I’m in detention, they’re out for recess. It’s not fun.”

Seau didn’t know if he’d practice Thursday.

“I sound like a broken record now right now, but for the most part, it’s just as frustrating for me as it is for the rest of the team,” Seau said.

Wiley was listed as doubtful, “but hopefully that can psych John Tait out and make him think I’m not playing, and he doesn’t watch film of me and then I show up on Sunday,” he said, referring to the Chiefs’ right tackle. “I’m trying to show up for Sunday but right now it’s not looking the best.”

Harrison was hurt in the season-opener at Cincinnati and missed the next two games.

“With an injury like this, unless you have significant time off, there’s always the chance of reinjuring it,” Harrison said. “It’s a tough situation, but you just try to be smart during the week and then see what you can do in the game.”

The Chiefs (3-2) average 34.2 points, second in the NFL, behind Trent Green and Priest Holmes.

Green, who was San Diego’s third-string quarterback during his rookie season of 1993, has thrown 12 touchdown passes and his 100.4 passer rating is fifth in the league.

Holmes has replaced San Diego’s LaDainian Tomlinson as the NFL’s leading rusher, with 590 yards and eight touchdowns.

Last year, Holmes rushed for 181 yards the most ever allowed by a Chargers opponent in a 25-20 Kansas City win in San Diego.

Chargers tight end Stephen Alexander also is listed as doubtful because of a sprained foot, and running back Terrell Fletcher’s status is questionable because of a sprained ankle.
