Clues scarce in Great Bend slayings

? More than a month after two women were found dead inside a bakery, police say the investigation is slowing down with no arrest likely soon.

The bodies of Mandi Alexander, 24, and Mary A. Drake, 79, were found Sept. 4 inside the Dolly Madison-Cake Discount Bakery. Alexander was a clerk and Drake was a customer, police said.

Police have never said how the women died. A driver who found the bodies said they were in a back office in a pool of blood.

Police Chief Dean Akings said officers were still interviewing people.

“We’re still following up leads, but it’s slowing down,” Akings said. “We’re hoping to get the piece of information that’s going to break it open.”

The bakery reopened Friday, with most of the former staff back at work. The store also now has four new security cameras and a television monitor.

Police are still seeking a man who was seen outside the store that evening and the person or people who made the last purchases at the store before the women were killed.

Crime Stoppers is offering a $12,000 reward for information leading to an arrest in the crimes, with $10,000 from Interstate Brands, the Kansas City, Mo., company that owns the Dolly Madison trademark.
