Senior only city placer at All-Around

Gymnasts are supposed to put on a happy face and smile brightly during their routines.

So it was obvious something was wrong when Lawrence High’s Molly Hoss grimaced on her landing after her routine on the bars at the Lawrence All-Around Invitational on Monday at LHS.

Her 8.325 put her just out of the top 10 in the event, and Hoss wasn’t pleased.

“I feel that I was kind of weak on my first two events,” she said. “But I think I redeemed myself on the last two. It was a bad routine. Whenever I have a bad routine, when I land, I show through my look how the routine went to my coach.”

The senior did finish strong, placing first in the beam (9.025) and fifth in the floor (9.0). Combined with her scores in bars and vault (8.55), Hoss placed fourth in the all-around (34.9).

Free State High’s Lacey Baxter finished 12th in the all-around with 34.025 points, just .1 away from the top 10.

Manhattan’s Melanie Weiser took first place at 35.45.

“Lacey nailed her bar routine,” FSHS coach Jenn Newman said. “She did really well on that and hit it the best she’s ever hit it. Overall, she had an exceptional meet. We’ve just got to keep pushing her to get her up there in the top 10.”

Baxter was fifth in the beam (8.775) and 10th in the bars (8.35). She also scored 8.6 in the vault and 8.3 in the floor.

“On bars and beam I was really happy with my scores,” Baxter said. “But on my floor I went the wrong way on one of my passes. I didn’t perform at my best, but in all it was pretty good. I just want to clean everything up for the meets to come.”

Newman said cleaning up routines was something the Firebirds needed to improve.

Kim Baker finished with an all-around total of 28.675, and Jaime Hornbaker scored 29.475.

“Overall, the team did really well,” Newman said. “We’re coming out of some injuries so we’re trying to get everything back up. We had a little bit of difficult with remembering routines tonight.”

LHS coach Kathy Johnson said the Lions at the meet also needed to sweat the small stuff.

“I think overall they had a pretty good meet,” Johnson said. “We had some good events and some not so good. We had a couple falls on the beam so we need to work on that a little bit. We just need to execute and work on our routines.”

Lawrence High’s Meredith West scored 30.95 in the all-around and Melissa Bowers finished with 29.05 points.
