Old home town – 100 years ago today

On Oct. 7, 1902, the Lawrence Journal told of controversy regarding the upcoming installation of Frank Strong as Chancellor noting: “Up on Mount Oread they are having more grief just now than was ever known before on the fair summit of the crowning glory of Kansas. It is all about the ‘coronation.’ Everybody in Kansas, and a few of the neighbors outside, is invited, and in some way the ‘hill gang’ had gotten it into its head that they are all coming. And disobeying the scriptural injunction, they are taking great heed as to how they shall be fed and housed. But that is not the greatest nor yet the least of their troubles. Even as in the halls of royalty cast cuts more ice than a hand saw, so even on the crest of Mount Oread ran and precedence and things are worrying the lives and livers out of the learned faculty…There is but one solace, and that is a dozen days it will all be over.”
