Holmes halts Jets – Kansas City 29, New York 25

Chiefs' running back delivers decisive score

? Priest Holmes gave Kansas City yet another stellar fourth-quarter finish.

The running back caught a 19-yard touchdown pass from Trent Green with 27 seconds left as the Chiefs beat the New York Jets, 29-25, Sunday.

Holmes was unstoppable as a back and receiver.

He ran for 152 yards and a touchdown against the league’s next-to-worst rushing defense, and he also caught nine passes for 81 yards and the winning score.

Holmes refused to talk after the game, so Green gushed instead.

“What can’t he do?” said Green, who went 23-for-33 for 296 yards and two touchdowns. “Teams are going to be focused on him as a running back, so his ability to catch the ball is going to make him that much more valuable.”

His value to the Chiefs has been immeasurable this season. While the Jets focused on Tony Gonzalez throughout the game and limited him to four receptions for 25 yards, Holmes dominated.

On the winning drive, Holmes either ran the ball or had a reception on six of the 10 plays.

“You’ve got to find a way to stop him,” linebacker James Darling said. “We just needed one more play at the end. If we make that play, and make them kick a field goal, we go into overtime and you never know what happens.”

The Chiefs (3-2) have thrived in the fourth quarter this season. Against the Jets (1-4), the Chiefs scored 14 points in the final quarter and have now scored a league-leading 85 fourth-quarter points.

They needed all that scoring in the fourth Sunday to overcome two deficits.

Kansas City running back Priest Holmes, left, breaks away from New York linebacker James Darling to score the go-ahead touchdown with 27 seconds remaining. Holmes finished with 233 yards total offense in the Chiefs' 29-25 victory Sunday at Giants Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J.

“The fourth quarter has been good to us all year,” Kansas City coach Dick Vermeil said. “On that last drive, they went on the field with confidence that they could score and it showed.”

With the game tied at 15 entering the fourth quarter, Chad Pennington threw a 27-yard TD pass to Santana Moss to give the Jets a 22-15 lead. It was Moss’ first career touchdown.

The Chiefs answered on their next possession, when Green threw a 60-yard TD pass to Dante Hall with 10:15 left to tie the game at 22.

John Hall kicked a 25-yard field goal with 2:54 remaining to give the Jets a 25-22 lead, but Kansas City marched 78 yards in 10 plays for the winning score.

“We just gave them big plays at the end,” Edwards said. “We’re not playing good defense at all and in the fourth quarter it really showed up.”

Curtis Martin and Chad Pennington gave the Jets an offensive spark, but it wasn’t enough to stop the team from losing its fourth straight game.

Martin had his first 100-yard game of the season, gaining 119 yards. Pennington went 23-of-30 for 245 yards in his first career start replacing the ineffective Vinny Testaverde.

Laveranues Coles had eight receptions for 116 yards, his first 100-yard game of the season for the Jets, who had been outscored 102-13 in their previous three games.

Martin finally looked like the running back who dominated last season, and his improved performance helped the Jets stay in the game.

Martin, who was hobbled by a sprained ankle since the season opener, entered the game with 98 yards rushing. In the first half alone, he had 89 yards and big runs of 25 and 35 yards his longest two gains of the season. He gave the Jets their first lead of the game with a 17-yard run that made it 7-3.

Pennington looked good, and his finest moment came on the final drive before halftime. Trailing 12-7, Pennington guided a seven play, 61-yard drive that he capped with a 2-yard TD pass to Anthony Becht. Martin ran for the 2-point conversion, giving the Jets a 15-12 lead.

On the drive, Pennington went 6-of-6 for 54 yards. Playing well was no consolation to the Jets, though.

“I can’t see us being any lower than we are,” defensive end John Abraham said. “This is the perfect time for an off week and to try to look at ourselves and each other and get it straight.”

The Chiefs play at San Diego, and can only hope Holmes continues his dominating play.

“It’s good to see that he had a game like this in New York,” Vermeil said. “It’s nice to see him get the credit he deserves.”

Notes: Kansas City PK Morten Andersen strained his hamstring in pregame warmups, but played and joined George Blanda as the only players to attempt 600 or more field goals. Also, S Greg Wesley bruised his left chest and S Lyle West had a left hip pointer. Jets CB Jamie Henderson re-injured his right shoulder and G J.P. Machado sprained his right ankle. Brothers Chad and Johnnie Morton played against each other Sunday. Chad had 110 yards on kickoff returns while Johnnie caught four passes for 56 yards.
