CROP Walk treks around city

More than 100 people participated Sunday in CROP Walk, a nondenominational trek around Lawrence that each year raises money for various local and national programs.

This year’s fund-raising goal is $12,000, which will be met through sponsorships and lump sum donations, said Delisa Drewes, treasurer for the Lawrence CROP Walk executive committee.

The event last year raised more than $11,000, one-fourth of which was divided between the Lawrence Salvation Army and the Lawrence Interdenominational Nutrition Kitchen program. The rest of the money is donated to various programs of the Church World Service.

The event, which included members of about 20 churches, started at 2 p.m. at West Side Presbyterian Church, 1024 Kasold Drive. Participants walked 4 or 10 kilometers.

Three injured in wreck

Three Topeka men received minor injuries Sunday in a car accident on County Road 2190 about a mile east of Lecompton, according to a report from the Kansas Highway Patrol.

Valentin Beltran-Pastor was traveling eastbound about 6 a.m. when his vehicle slipped onto the right shoulder, drove through a fence and down an embankment before hitting a tree.

Beltran-Pastor was transported by Lifestar to St. Francis Hospital and Medical Center in Topeka. Two other passengers also were injured: Francisco Medina-Vazquez was transported by ambulance to Lawrence Memorial Hospital; and Juan Mesa-Renteria was transported by Lifenet to KU Medical Center. All three men were treated and released.

A fourth passenger, Leonardo Lozano, declined treatment.
