New Orleans: Hurricane generates scores of poisonings

Home generators used by people who lost power after Hurricane Lili have led to more than 60 cases of carbon monoxide poisoning in Louisiana, including one death, health officials said Sunday.

Lili blew through the state on Thursday, flooding thousands of homes and badly damaging others with 100 mph wind that toppled trees and power lines.

By noon Sunday, some 107,572 homes and businesses were still without power in coastal Louisiana.

Many people were using home generators until power lines could be repaired. The generators run on a variety of fuels, most commonly gasoline or natural gas, and odorless, colorless carbon monoxide is a by-product of the fuel burning.

Florida: Explorers reach deal on shipwreck recovery

A salvage company has struck a deal to try to recover what may be the richest shipwreck ever: a British warship laden with gold and silver potentially worth an estimated $4 billion.

A storm sank the HMS Sussex in 1694 off Gibraltar in the Mediterranean Sea, killing most of the 500 men aboard. Its treasure was intended to be a political payoff to Spain, an ally during Britain’s conflict with France.

Odyssey Marine Exploration’s 20-year deal with Britain allows it to claim a share of any booty recovered. By international law, the 157-foot Sussex and its cargo belong to its home country because it was a warship.

The project will begin next year. Tampa-based Odyssey will spend three to six months using robotic vehicles to explore an area a half-mile deep where company researchers in 1998 found what is believed to be the Sussex.

Arkansas: Mother, teens charged in beating death

Police charged a mother and her twin 13-year-olds in the fatal beating of a woman on a city street.

Police spokesman Lt. Chip Stokes said the three family members were taken into custody on suspicion of second-degree murder in the death of Altellia Givan, 42, on Saturday.

“From what we have gathered, there was a fight at the residence and the suspects chased her down the street,” Stokes said. He said witnesses told police Givan was allegedly beaten with pieces of lumber or tree limbs.

Evelyn Ticey and her twin boy and girl were being held at the Faulkner County Detention Center, a police dispatcher said. Stokes said the prosecutor’s office would decide today whether the children would be tried as juveniles or as adults.
