Faces and places

Lawrence resident Lynate Pettengill has been featured in several national magazines. She is a life coach with the International Coach Federation. Her coaching services and advice are featured in the October issue of Child magazine and the fall issues of Succeed and College Bound magazines. Pettengill specializes in living well single and parenting after divorce. She coaches clients throughout the United States and offers motivational talks and workshops on a variety of topics.

Barbara Braa recently attended a weeklong Trust & Financial Services School and earned an honors diploma after completing the required exam. The course was presented by the Schools of Banking and sponsored by the Kansas and Nebraska bankers associations and the Kansas and Iowa trust associations. Course topics included trust administration, estate planning, probate and conservatorships, investments, retirement planning, income taxes, compliance, operations and business development. Braa is a trust officer for CornerBank in Lawrence.

Connie Andes has joined Coordinated Systems & Supplies Inc., Lawrence, as account executive. Andes will be in charge of sales and marketing to the Hawthorn Suites Hotels. Coordinated Systems & Supplies is a manufacturer and supplier of printed items for the hotel industry and advertising speciality companies.

Century 21 Miller and Midyett, Lawrence, announces Fred Schmidt has joined its firm as a sales associate. He will specialize in residential sales in the Douglas County area.

Don Edman has joined Central National Bank in Lawrence as vice president of Mortgage Lending. He is responsible for business development and residential lending. Edman attended Lawrence schools and graduated from Kansas University’s School of Business. He previously was a staffing consultant for Signature Staffing in Overland Park. He has 12 years of banking experience in the Lawrence area.

Heather Griffith, physical therapist, has joined Neu Physical Therapy, Lawrence. Heather graduated from Kansas University Medical Center with a master’s degree in physical therapy. During her clinical rotations, Griffith spent nine weeks at the Capper Foundation in Topeka and nine weeks at Mid-America Rehabilitation Hospital in Overland Park. Other clinical experience includes rotations at Watkins Memorial Health Center, St. Francis Hospital and Medical Center and Stormont-Vail Medical Center.

Arlene Newcomb has been promoted to bakery manager at Dillons, 1015 W. 23rd St. She has worked at the company since 1981. Prior to the promotion she had served as the store’s bakery manager backup.

Dr. John Keller recently returned from Houston, where he completed the certifying examination for the American Board of Plastic Surgery. He is now board certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery in addition to his previous certification by the American Board of Surgery.

Keller joined Dr. Scott Thellman in practice at Lawrence Plastic Surgery in 2001.

The United Way of Douglas County is pleased to accept a “thank you and farewell” gift from Davol Inc. in the amount of $5,000. Davol and its employees have been longtime contributors to the United Way’s annual fund-raising campaigns. Davol has announced that the Lawrence-based plant is scheduled for closure.

Barry Walthall, code enforcement manager in the city’s Neighborhood Resources Department, was installed as president of the western section of the International Association of Electrical Inspectors.

The western section is a 17 state regional sub-division of the international association. As section president, Walthall will serve on code discussion panels and assist in planning educational activities.

The association focuses on electrical training and safety for inspectors and installers. Its primary concern is electrical safety.

Honors and awards

Westside Deli & Market, Lawrence, was named a category winner in the Kansas Beef Council’s 2002 Beef Backer Awards program. The award, established in 1987, honors restaurants exhibiting outstanding leadership in menuing and merchandising beef. Westside Deli & Market was honored as the Best Value Added Beef Menu Item for its classic deli reuben.

Michael McGrew, of the Lawrence Board of Realtors, was named to the 2002 Kansas Association of Realtors Honor Society. He will be honored by the association this week at its annual convention in Overland Park. The society recognizes and rewards the high professional achievement of members who seek excellence through education, contribute their expertise and contribute their time and skills to board and association leadership. Less than 2 percent of Kansas Realtors receive the Honor Society certificate.

City of Lawrence’s Public Works Department employees placed high in the Solid Waste Association of North America Truck Road-e-o Sept. 21st in Salina. Jim Garcia, Larry Devers, David Pentlin and Mike Payne maneuvered various styles of refuse collection vehicles through a skills course at the Kansas Sunflower Chapter of SWANA-sponsored event.

Garcia won first place in the rear loader refuse truck competition. He finished first in this same event three years ago and was the SWANA National Champion in 2000. His first-place finish makes him eligible to attend the National Championship contest in 2003.

Devers, in his first year of competition, finished second in the rear loader event and Pentlin finished second in the roll-off truck event.

Ron King, local American Family Insurance agent, was District Agent of the Month for September. This is the third time that he has earned the honor. King also has qualified for the company’s All Lines Leaders Cruise to the Cayman Islands.

Coming events

Housing and Credit Counseling Inc. will present its three-part home maintenance series in October. Each class will be from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. at the Buchanan Center, 1195 S.W. Buchanan, in Topeka.

The first class, “Weed & Seed,” will be Wednesday. It will take an in-depth look at lawn care and cost-effective landscaping tips. “Pipes & Circuits,” simple plumbing and electrical repair techniques, will be presented Oct. 16. “Paint and Paper,” which will be given on Oct. 23, will cover the basic do’s and don’ts of painting and inexpensive decorating tips.

The Topeka Chapter of the Kansas Society of Professional Engineers will meet at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at the City of Emporia Water Treatment Plant, 2910 W. 24th St., Emporia. Downtown Lawrence Inc. will present an educational seminar on “Shoplifting and Fraud Prevention” from 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Eldridge Hotel, 701 Mass. The Lawrence Police Department will give the presentation.

Ross DeVol, director of regional and demographic studies at the Milken Institute, will be the keynote speaker at the New Economy Speaker Series, presented by the New Economy Council of Greater Kansas City and KCCatalyst.

The breakfast seminar will be from 8:15 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Downtown Marriott Count Basie Ballroom in downtown Kansas City, Mo.

Through his work at the Milken Institute, DeVol has emerged as one of the nation’s leading authorities on the dynamics of comparative regional growth. DeVol appears regularly on national television and radio to discuss a variety of economic topics.
