Old home town – 25, 40 and 100 years ago today

IN 1977

The city commissioners considered three proposals from the state and found them all unsuitable. At issue were a bid to fill Clinton Reservoir, when completed, on a gradual basis rather than all all once; to establish an “honor camp” of minimum security prison inmates near the reservoir; and to have the Kansas Corporation Commission take over regulation of municipal utilities, presumably including the local water system. The commission chose to set up meetings with authorities on the first two proposals and to go on record as firmly opposing any utility takeover.

IN 1962

New Lawrence High class officers were elected. Senior class president Steve Page, vice president Cynthia Brown, treasurer Nancy Maloney and secretary Cheryl Hentsch. Junior class president Jama King, vice president Pam Mills, secretary Lu Surface and treasurer Cheri Edmondson. Sophomore class president Ted Crady, vice president Mike Glover, secretary Naomi Camin and treasurer Linda Krogh.

IN 1902

On Oct. 5, 1902, the Lawrence Journal had the following headlines: “BUILT IN LAWRENCEUndertaker’s Ambulance Car Turned out by R.E. Knox’s new factory.” The Journal told of the first piece of work that had been built in the hearse, funeral car and ambulance factory in the city, noting, “The ambulance cost $1,500, is painted a glistening white, built of the very finest wood, and finished in the most elegant style, and substantial from the ground up The factory will be established in the old barb wire factory building, as soon as the weather makes it possible for Mr. Knox to move his shop furniture and unfinished vehicles to Lawrence.”
