Caring legacy

To the editor:

I can understand the writer’s opinion that the young driver of the car that hit Heather needs to be accountable for her actions. I am sure that will happen in time. It is difficult to have patience with the American system of justice, but this system does not try, convict or incarcerate its citizens before the facts are known.

To you, Heather Coulter was a “24-year-old social worker who was killed” and a springboard for your opinion.

To me, she was a friend, a fellow volunteer, a strong compassionate woman who cared deeply about the youths she worked with and for, and a shining example of a life well-lived, someone who gave of herself so that others could have a life of hope and inspiration.

Heather’s life work was one of compassion, generosity of spirit and keeping kids out of the detention facility and with their families and/or loved ones.

If you had known Heather, you would understand why your call for the driver to be treated in the way you describe is a dishonor to Heather’s life, memory and legacy, as well as a slap to the justice system in this county.

Let’s not confuse justice with vengeance.

Rae Watson,
