Firebird soccer tops Shawnee Heights, 3-0

Topeka The Free State High boys soccer team picked up its second straight shutout victory with a 3-0 victory against Shawnee Heights on Thursday.

“It was a good win for us,” Free State coach Jason Pendleton said. “It was an all-around good performance for us tonight.”

Joel Angelone scored all three Firebird goals. Alan Martinez assisted on the second.

Aaron Williams made his first start in goal for the Firebirds (6-2-2) and earned the shutout.

Free State will face Kansas City-Wyandotte at 10 a.m. Saturday at the FSHS field.

Firebirds’ Johnson seventh at Olathe

Olathe Free State High golfer Ashley Johnson finished seventh in Thursday’s Olathe South Challenge, scoring a 45. Olathe East’s Karrah Clay won the tournament, scoring 42.

“It was pretty tight in the individual results,” FSHS coach Craig Hershiser said. “There were six kids from 42 to 45. It was pretty well played on an individual basis.”

The Firebirds posted a team score of 216. Jaclyn Morgenstern and Hilary Armstrong each shot 56.

Kym Scafe shot a 59, and Bree Beasley totaled 63.

The Firebirds will participate in the Sunflower League tournament on Monday.

Free State boys second, girls third at meet

Topeka Free State High’s boys cross country team finished in second place and the Firebirds’ girls team finished third at the Hayden Invitational on Thursday.

Hiral Bhakta won the boys’ race in 16:44, and Adrian Ludwig was right behind in second. Alex Rock finished fourth at 17:13.

Alysha Valencia took first place in the girls race in 12:02.

“We are getting very close to putting together our best team race,” Firebirds coach Steve Heffernan said. “Our team is starting to come around now and the next couple of weeks should be exciting.”

Seabury medals two at cross country meet

Leavenworth Seabury cross country runners Katie Pottroff and Adam Davis each medaled at the Lansing Invitational on Thursday at Saint Mary College.

Pottroff finished eighth in the girls’ race with a time of 14:12. Davis was 18th in the boys’ race, finishing in 19:17.

“It was a tough, wet course,” Seabury coach Jill Boyle said. “And the times were pretty slow, but overall they did pretty good.”

Regan Sisson finished 29th in the girls’ race in 15:35, and Matt Parker was 30th in the boys’ race in 20:10.

Ottawa’s Lisa Morisey won the girls’ race in 12:51. Ottawa placed first as a team in the race. Kansas City Christian, led by Philip Brandon’s winning time of 17:02, won the boys’ race.

Ottawa volleyball falls

Ottawa The Ottawa University volleyball team lost to Southwestern College, 16-30, 30-27, 30-27, 21-30, 15-11, on Thursday. Emily Foster had 23 kills for Ottawa, 5-10.
