Report of sexual assault determined to be false

A 15-year-old girl falsely reported a sexual assault Tuesday, and now she could face charges herself, Lawrence Police said.

Police were called by the girl who said the incident took place at Lawrence High School, where she is a student, Sgt. Mike Pattrick said.

Police investigated and determined the report to be false, Pattrick said. Police will give information to the Douglas County District Attorney’s Office. The girl could be charged with falsely reporting a crime.

Police investigating theft of money from bank

Lawrence Police are investigating more than $6,500 missing from Central National Bank, 711 Wakarusa Drive.

Bank officials called police Monday and said the money had been taken during the past several months, Lawrence Police said Wednesday. Police said they had questioned a former employee identified only as a 22-year-old woman.

No arrests have been made, and the investigation is continuing.

Landowner puzzled by loss of 40 trees

A rural Douglas County man was startled last month when he discovered someone had entered his property and chopped down 40 trees.

On Sept. 18, Douglas County Sheriff’s officers were called to investigate the incident by the 82-year-old landowner in the 800 section of East 1300 Road. The trees were left where they fell, but many of their branches were cut off, a sheriff’s report made public Wednesday said.

Several suspects were located, officers said. The suspects worked out a financial arrangement for loss of the trees with the landowner, officers said. No arrests were made. The sheriff’s report wasn’t made public until Wednesday.

Friends of library to open annual book sale today

The Friends of the Lawrence Public Library will begin its annual book sale today through Thursday in a tent at Seventh and Kentucky streets.

The sale opens today from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. with members-only night. It will be open to the public 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday. From 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday is half-price day, 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday is $5 bag night, and 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday is $3 bag night.

The sale will offer more than 100,000 books and also will feature silent actions and special sales.

In the past, the sale has raised more than $70,000 a year. All proceeds go to the library.

Salvation Army seeks donations for storm victims

The Salvation Army is helping people in Louisiana, Alabama and Mississippi who have been affected by Tropical Storm Isidore. The army is providing victims with meals, counseling, shelter and cleaning supplies.

Efforts are run out of a staging area located in each state. Each area has 22 emergency disaster vehicles, called canteens.

So far, the army has fed and sheltered more than 750 people and uses canteens to provide assistance and food to those who stayed in their homes. It is also distributing more than 5,000 cleanup kits to survivors in all three states.

Tickets available for radio satire show

Anna Nicole Smith, Martha Stewart and President Bush will be among the satirical targets for Kansas Public Radio’s “Right Between the Ears” this month.

The comedy troupe will perform at 5 p.m. and 8 p.m. Saturday at Liberty Hall. The 8 p.m. show will be broadcast live on Kansas Public Radio stations, including KPR flagship KANU 91.5 in Lawrence.

Tickets for the show are $12 for cabaret seats and $10 in the balcony. They can be ordered at Liberty Hall and Ticketmaster outlets.

“Right Between the Ears” has received several national awards and this summer was featured on Delta Radio, the in-flight programming on Delta Airlines.

Comedian to perform at KU

A comedian who has been featured on BET and “The Tonight Show” will perform Saturday in Lawrence.

Michael Jr. will perform at 7 p.m. in Woodruff Auditorium in the Kansas Union. The show is sponsored by Student Union Activities.

Rock Chalk Revue selects theme for next production

Rock Chalk Revue organizers have announced the theme for next year’s show at Kansas University.

“Wanted” will be the theme for the annual production that features students in KU living organizations.

The 53rd revue is set for March 6, 7 and 8 at the Lied Center. The show raises money for United Way.
