Wilkes: “I’m going to be a Jayhawk”

Omar Wilkes, a 6-4 guard from Los Angeles, on Wednesday afternoon capped a day of high drama by verbally committing to Kansas.

Wilkes chose the Jayhawks over UCLA, where his sister, Sabreen, is a volleyball player, and Cal-Berkeley.

Wilkes announced his decision at a press conference at his high school.

On Wednesday morning, 6-11 David Padgett of Reno, Nev., made it official, choosing KU over North Carolina and Arizona.

Wilkes and Padgett are good friends, and it had been rumored that they wanted to spend their college careers together.

In fact, earlier in the day, Padgett’s dad and high school coach, Pete said, “We’re keeping our fingers crossed,” in regards to Wilkes joining his son at KU.

Wilkes averaged 22.0 points, six rebounds, five assists and four steals last season.
