Suits start against landlord charged for eavesdropping

Former residents of a Lawrence apartment building will tell a Douglas County jury this week about the “horror, revulsion and anger” they said they suffered when peepholes were discovered in their apartment walls.

Seven of the eight plaintiffs in the civil case were introduced Tuesday to potential jurors. Each seeks damages in excess of $75,000 for invasion of privacy and negligence on the part of William Lemesany, owner of Parkway Terrace Apartments, in the 2300 block of Murphy Drive.

“They are going to share with you what it’s like to have been harmed,” said Peter Jouras Jr., a Fairway attorney representing the plaintiffs.

The jury selection began Tuesday morning before Douglas County Judge Jack Murphy. Jouras and Lemesany’s attorney, Mike Riling, began selecting from nearly 50 people.

The selection process ended at 5 p.m. and will continue today. Testimony is also expected to begin today.

Lemesany also is charged in a related criminal case with 10 counts of eavesdropping. That case is pending, also before Judge Murphy.

Lemesany was charged after police were notified in 1999 by tenants who found peepholes in the walls of their apartments.

DNA evidence allegedly linking Lemesany to the incidents is expected to play a key role in both the criminal and civil cases.
