Padgett commits to KU

Both Rivalshoops.com and theinsiders.com are reporting that 6-11, 240-pound Reno (Nev.) High senior forward David Padgett has verbally committed to play his college basketball at Kansas.

Padgett picked KU over North Carolina and Arizona. He called KU coach Roy Williams and UNC’s Matt Doherty on Tuesday night, then told Arizona coach Lute Olson of his decision today.

“My guess is it was a gut feeling,” Pete Padgett, his father and high school coach, said. “All three schools were so strong. He took the day off of school yesterday to think about it.

“Yesterday, he said, ‘Dad, I want to go to Kansas.'”

Padgett’s dad cited KU’s ability to develop big men, KU’s success with west coast players and the great example set by former Nevada prep standout Jerod Haase, now a KU aide, as deciding factors.

Omar Wilkes, a 6-4 guard from Los Angeles, was expected to make his announcement this afternoon. Wilkes is expected to choose from among KU, UCLA and Cal.
