Calvary Temple Assembly of God

The women of Calvary Temple Assembly of God, 606 W. 29th St. Terrace, will meet today to decorate the church for the Christmas holidays.

The Women’s Ministries have changed their names to “Women of the Word” or “WOW.” The group will meet at 6:30 p.m. Jan. 14. There will be no meeting in December.

Centenary United Methodist

The eighth annual Festival of Nativities will be the first three weekends of December at Centenary United Methodist Church, 245 N. Fourth St.

More than 250 handmade nativity scenes from around the world will be displayed. Crafts and baked goods will be available for sale. There is no admission charge to the exhibit, which includes refreshments and seasonal music.

The church is handicapped accessible, and special group tours of the Festival of Nativities are available by appointment.

The event will be open to the public from noon to 4 p.m. on the following dates: Dec. 7-8; Dec. 14-15; Dec. 21-22.

First United Methodist

First United Methodist Church, 946 Vt., will have its second annual Memory Tree Service at 4 p.m. Sunday in the sanctuary. Those who attend the service are invited to bring an ornament that will honor the memory of a loved one or friend who has died. Ornaments will be placed on the tree as the names of loved ones are read. The Memory Tree will remain in the sanctuary throughout Advent and Christmas.

A Taize contemplative prayer service will be held at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday in the sanctuary. The service will feature meditation and prayer through song.

Immanuel Lutheran Church & University Student Center

The Advent season will begin with special midweek services at 7:30 p.m. Wednesdays (Dec. 4, 11 and 18) at Immanuel Lutheran Church & University Student Center, 15th and Iowa streets. Special illustrative messages and music will be shared.

Each of the services will be preceded by a light soup-and-sandwich dinner at 6:30 p.m., provided in the Friendship Center behind the church.

Immanuel will be ringing the bells for The Salvation Army from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Dec. 7 at Checkers Foods, 2300 La.

On Dec. 8, Immanuel will welcome new members who have joined the church since the end of September.

Mustard Seed Christian Fellowship

The International Students’ Luncheon will be held at noon Sunday at the home of Walt and Ann Kihm, 315 Dakota.

Women of Titus II will meet at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday in the fellowship hall. Childcare is available.

Plymouth Congregational

World AIDS Day will be celebrated with two special musical selections during the 9:30 a.m. Sunday worship service at Plymouth Congregational Church, 925 Vt.

The Widor “Toccata” will be the organ postlude. The Handbell Choir will be ringing a special selection in the Mayflower Room after the service, also to commemorate World AIDS Day.

St. Margaret’s Episcopal

A film clip from “A Christmas Carol” will be shown during Sunday worship services at Saint Margaret’s Episcopal Church, 5700 W. Sixth St., as the Rev. Darrel Proffitt highlights the Advent lessons in Scrooge’s life.

For the next four Sundays, services will feature a sermon series called “From Humbug to Hallelujah,” in preparation for a Christ-centered Christmas.

Individual families will light the Advent wreath at the 7:45 a.m., 9 a.m., 10:45 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. Sunday worship services.

St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church

Our Lady of Guadalupe Celebration will begin with a Spanish Mass at 9 a.m. Dec. 14 at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, 1234 Ky., followed by festivities in the church basement parish hall.

There will be a piñata for children to break; Mexican hot chocolate, breads and cookies; raffles; a bazaar table; and traditional dances performed by the St. John’s Dancers.

Participants are asked to bring a nonperishable food item to place in the basket during the opening procession.

Trinity Episcopal

Sunday is the first Sunday of the Advent season. Worship services will be held at 8 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. at Trinity Episcopal Church, 1011 Vt.

The Adult Forum begins at 9:30 a.m. and will be the first in a series of Advent lessons presented by Deacons Dick and Rita Tracy.

Following the 10:30 a.m. services, the annual Advent wreath making will be held in the parish hall. Greens, candles and wreath forms will be available, or participants are welcome to bring their own wreath forms to decorate.

Advent prayer booklets also will be available.

Unitarian Fellowship of Lawrence

The Rev. David Grimm will give a talk on “The Early Emerson” from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Sunday at the Unitarian Fellowship of Lawrence, 1263 N. 1100 Road.
