Networks duel over sweeps numbers

Stop us if you’ve heard this one before, but … CBS Tuesday claimed a crucial November sweeps just minutes after NBC claimed victory.

In a conference call Tuesday, NBC Entertainment boss Jeff Zucker said “the biggest surprise of the sweeps” could be the network’s victory among total viewers – a surprise only because CBS won by nearly a million viewers last November. A little while later, CBS Television boss Leslie Moonves said – surprise! – CBS will win in “household and total viewers” when the sweeps conclude Wednesday.

The biggest winners may be ABC, which pulled into second place (behind NBC) among the cherished adult 18-to-49 viewers, an 8 percent increase, thanks to “The Bachelor” – and The WB, up 18 percent.

Meanwhile, the real news out of the dueling conference calls: CBS will premiere its new version of “Star Search” (no host yet, and definitely not Ed McMahon) at 8 p.m. Jan. 9 , and there it will remain until “Survivor” returns. Separately, Moonves said the network might launch “Queens Supreme,” the Oliver Platt courtroom drama shot entirely in Queens, in February.

NBC will launch the new Josh Brolin drama about a U.S. senator, “Mr. Sterling,” at 8 p.m. Jan. 10. Also, “Kingpin,” about Mexican drug lords and NBC’s attempt at an extremely gritty “Sopranos”-style drama, and “Watching Ellie” both join the schedule in March. And “Providence” alert: Zucker said he might have erred in dumping the show and is thinking about bringing it back.

Fox – which didn’t have a good sweeps, but the less said about that the better – would premiere “American Idol” with two separate, 90-minute specials on Jan. 21-22. Also, in January, “Fastlane” moves to Friday nights, and “Bernie Mac”/”Cedric the Entertainer” moves into the 9 p.m. Wednesday hole.
