Waltz helps Kansas women win second straight – KU 66, Cal State Fullerton 56

? For the first time since March 6, 2001, Kansas UniversityâÂÂs womenâÂÂs basketball team has a winning streak.

Sophomore forward Blair Waltz scored a game-high 20 points on 7-of-9 shooting Wednesday afternoon to lead KU to a 66-56 victory against Cal State Fullerton.

Waltz made both her shots from three-point range and also made all four of her free-throw attempts.

âÂÂI thought Blair had a nice game tonight,â said KU coach Marian Washington, whose team improved to 2-0. âÂÂShe had an overall outstanding offensive performance.âÂÂ

KU, which defeated Texas-El Paso on Sunday in its season-opener, finished 5-25 last season and hadnâÂÂt won back-to-back games since defeating Texas A&M in the 2000-2001 regular-season finale and Oklahoma State in the first round of the Big 12 Conference tournament.

The Jayhawks play Saturday at San Diego. Kansas hasnâÂÂt won three straight games since defeating Louisiana-Monroe, Illinois and Eastern Illinois early in the 2000-2001 season.

Of course, this is a different KU team.

Freshman forward Crystal Kemp finished with 15 points and five rebounds.

Sophomore transfer Aquanita Burras had 10 points and a team-high seven rebounds.

Freshman center Tamara Ransburg added eight points and six rebounds for the Jayhawks, who owned a 40-32 rebounding advantage.

Freshman Erica Hallman added nine points and a team-high four assists off the bench.

The Titans (1-2) were led by junior guard Tamara QuinnâÂÂs 15 points. Senior Heather Hansen and freshman Andrea Adams each added 12 points, while junior Rochelle Ortega had five points and a game-high 10 rebounds.

The Titans led 5-2 in the early going before the Jayhawks exploded for a 14-2 run over a span of 2:32. Kansas led by as many as 12 points in the first half.

Cal State Fullerton cut the lead to four points with a little more than a minute left in the first half when Quinn scored five points in an 8-0 run. A bucket by Waltz with 52 seconds remaining upped the lead back to six and the Jayhawks went into the locker room leading 32-23 after a last-second three-pointer from halfcourt by Hallman.

The Titans got back into it with a 14-4 run that included back-to-back three pointers by both Quinn and Adams to cut the deficit to, 41-37, with 13:10 remaining, but that was as close as Cal State Fullerton would get.
