Suspect pleads guilty for government threat

? A Derby man has pleaded guilty to threatening to blow up a Wichita Social Security office after the agency stopped processing his claims when he changed his name to Melissa.

Ted “Melissa” Mangold, 46, also asked the judge Monday to address him as a woman, and he agreed to undergo psychiatric evaluation as part of his plea in Sedgwick County District Court. He pleaded guilty to the felony of criminal threat.

Court and police records show that Mangold became upset because Social Security stopped processing his claims after he changed his name to Melissa.

During the plea hearing, Judge Greg Waller honored Mangold’s request to be called “Ms.” and set sentencing for Dec. 19.

Mangold admitted he delivered a letter Aug. 25 to the Wichita police substation. In the letter, Mangold said he intended to blow up the Social Security office and threatened five judges; he also declared war on the government.
