Aloha Stadium to increase security

Honolulu – Security will be increased and alcohol sales may stop early when Alabama visits Hawaii on Saturday in an effort to prevent a repeat of what happened last weekend against Cincinnati.

Players from Hawaii and Cincinnati charged onto the field and were separated by police after scuffling for about five minutes following Hawaii’s 20-19 come-from-behind victory Saturday night. Fans also taunted and threw things at Cincinnati players as they went to the locker room.

Friedgen, Kruczek to coach all star game

Orlando, Fla. – Maryland coach Ralph Friedgen and Central Florida coach Mike Kruczek will be the coaches at for the Rotary Gridiron Classic College All-Star Game.

Friedgen, who led the Terrapins to an ACC title and an Orange Bowl bid last season, has led Maryland to a 9-3 mark this season and is in the running for a Peach Bowl bid. Kruczek has led the Golden Knights to a 6-5 mark in their first year in the Mid-American Conference.

Quarterback blasts FSU

St. Petersburg, Fla. – Quarterback Adrian McPherson blasted Florida State coaches Tuesday, one day after he was kicked off the football team amid reports that police planned to question him in the theft and forgery of a blank check. McPherson said the staff failed to gather all the facts. Florida State coach Bobby Bowden said he was willing to re-evaluate the sophomore’s status after “the thing has settled down.” But McPherson said he never wants to play for the Seminoles again. McPherson did admit involvement in the theft of a blank check but did not cash it and never received any money from it. He has not been charged with any crimes.

Columbia fires Tellier

New York – Columbia coach Ray Tellier was fired Tuesday after 14 seasons but will remain at the school as an assistant athletic director. Although the Lions were 1-9 and last in the Ivy League this season, Tellier produced two rare winning seasons in the mid-1990s. Columbia was 5-4-1 in ’94 for its first winning season since 1971, and 8-2 in ’96 :quot; its best mark since 1945.

Holtz gets extension

Columbia, S.C. – South Carolina coach Lou Holtz had his $800,000-a-year contract extended one year through 2007 on Tuesday.

Cougar QB hobbled

Spokane, Wash. – Washington State quarterback Jason Gesser is still on crutches and he said Tuesday that swelling must go down on his ankle before doctors can determine if he will play in the Cougars’ next game. The No. 9 Cougars (9-2) must beat UCLA on Dec. 7 to qualify for the Rose Bowl.

West Virginia campus beefs up security

Morgantown, W.Va. – Mountaineer Field will be empty Saturday but security will still be beefed up in case West Virginia beats Pittsburgh in the annual Backyard Brawl 75 miles away.

The extra precautions are in response to what happened last week when WVU defeated Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Va. Students left at home celebrated by setting more than 30 fires and tearing down the goal posts at the empty stadium.

At least three students were arrested.

Columbus officials: melee was worst ever

Columbus, Ohio – Video images and photographs will be used for the first time to charge rioters following the worst disturbance ever near Ohio State University. Fans celebrating Ohio State’s 14-9 football victory against rival Michigan last weekend set more than 100 fires, torched nine cars, broke windows of homes and stores and pelted firefighters with rocks and debris.

Police records showed that 54 people were arrested as of Tuesday.

Hornets dismiss Volek

Sacramento, Calif. – Sacramento State football coach John Volek was fired Tuesday after the Hornets finished the season 5-7. In eight years at Sacramento State, Volek went 31-56-1.

Jackson State cans coach

Jackson, Miss. – Robert Hughes will not return as football coach at Jackson State following the team’s third straight season with a 7-4 record. The school said Tuesday athletic director Roy Culberson recommended Hughes be given another university job.

Fourteen cities bidding for Army-Navy game

East Rutherford, N.J. – Philadelphia, Baltimore, Washington and East Rutherford, N.J., are among 14 cities that have expressed an interest in being the future home of the Army-Navy game.

The service academies’ agreement with Philadelphia expires after next year’s game. Chicago, Miami, Pittsburgh, Houston, San Antonio, Tampa, Jacksonville, Fla., Buffalo, N.Y., and the New England region also inquired about the new five-year contract.

NCAA clears Hurricane

Coral Gables, Fla. – The NCAA has cleared Miami center Brett Romberg of any wrongdoing stemming from a bet he made with a talk show host.

N.C. State lands bowl

Raleigh, N.C. – North Carolina State accepted a bid Tuesday to play in the Gator Bowl, the school’s third straight postseason game in Florida under coach Chuck Amato. The No. 21 Wolfpack (10-3) will play either the winner of the Pittsburgh-West Virginia game this weekend or Notre Dame.
