Big 12 Women’s Roundup: K-State women claim title
Manhattan ? Kansas State coach Deb Patterson nearly ran out of adjectives to describe forward Kendra Wecker.
Wecker had a career-high 26 points and 14 rebounds, and Laurie Koehn scored 23 as No. 4 Kansas State beat No. 14 Penn State 88-66 to win the preseason WNIT on Sunday.
“Kendra was absolutely tremendous, phenomenal, extraordinary, dominant,” Patterson said. “She was an absolute champion. She put Penn State on their heels and was virtually unstoppable.”
Kansas State (4-0), which beat opponents by an average of 16 points during the weeklong tournament, pulled away from the Lady Lions (4-1) with an 8-0 run with 4:34 remaining to win its first WNIT title.
Koehn started the second half with five straight points to make an eight-point halftime lead 13. The Lady Lions trimmed it to nine before Kendra Wecker, the tournament MVP, answered with two straight baskets and Penn State never got closer.
Wecker averaged 22 points and 11 rebounds during the four-game tournament. She had a double-double in all but one game.
Nicole Ohlde had 17 points and 10 rebounds, and Megan Mahoney scored 16 for K- State.
No. 13 Texas Tech 99, Washington 67
Lubbock, Texas – Natalie Ritchie made four 3-pointers and scored 20 points to lead Texas Tech over Washington. Texas Tech (1-1) scored 11 straight points to extend its lead to 19-5 with 12:20 remaining in the first half.
No. 22 Iowa State 67, St. Francis, Pa., 45

Ames, Iowa – Lindsey Wilson scored 19 points and Anne O’Neil added 10 to lead Iowa State to a win over St. Francis. Seven Iowa State players made at least one 3-pointer, and the Cyclones finished with 13 3s.
Nebraska 71, Rice 56
Lincoln, Neb. – Alexa Johnson’s 21 points led Nebraska past Rice. Johnson was 8-of-13 from the field and a perfect 5-of-5 at the free throw line for Nebraska (2-0). Rice (0-2) and Nebraska were tied at 29-all at the break, but Nebraska made 20-of-22 free throw attempts in the second half to pull away.
Colorado 86, Detroit Mercy 43
Boulder, Colo. – Sabrina Scott had 18 points and seven rebounds and a scrappy Colorado defense forced 35 turnovers. Scott connected on 8-of-10 shots including two 3-pointers for Colorado (2-0).
