Shockers barely survive

? Randy Burns hit a 3-pointer with 18.4 seconds left and Jamar Howard finished with a team-best 18 points, helping Wichita State hold off Texas-Arlington to win its season opener 76-74 Saturday.

Burns finished with 15 points and Jerome Holman had 12 for the Shockers.

Derrick Obasohan led Texas-Arlington with 21 points, including 14 in the second half.

Wichita State trailed by as many as 15 points in the first half, but Howard led the comeback, scoring 13 of his 18 points in the second half.

After trailing 42-35 at halftime, the Shockers used an 11-2 run after halftime to take a 46-44 lead. After that, neither team led by more than six points. The score was tied at 66 with 4:30 left.
