Big 12 Women Roundup: BYU stuns No. 12 Texas, 79-63

? Erin Thorn scored 19 points, and Brigham Young used a decisive run in the second half to topple No. 12 Texas in the season opener for both teams Friday night.

Jennifer Leitner added 18 points and Danielle Cheesman finished with 13 points for the Cougars, who held Texas to 29-percent shooting (18-for-63).

There were 62 total fouls and 81 free throws, where BYU also held a decided advantage. The Cougars were 34-for-43 from the line while Texas was just 20-for-38. Jamie Carey led Texas with 17 points and Heather Schreiber scored 11 for the Longhorns.

No. 23 Oklahoma 65, Tulsa 61

Tulsa, Okla. – Theresa Schuknecht scored 14 points to help lead No. 23 Oklahoma in the Bertha Teague Classic. Caton Hill added 13 points, including 9-of-10 from the free throw line, and grabbed 11 rebounds for the Sooners (1-1). Chelsi Welch also had 13 points.

Colorado 85, Rice 66

Boulder, Colo. – Tera Bjorklund scored 21 points and Kate Fagan had 17 for Colorado. The Buffaloes, who advanced to the NCAA Elite Eight in a 24-10 season a year ago, also got 16 points from Sabrina Scott.

Nebraska 63, Grambling State 40

Lincoln, Neb. – Alexa Johnson scored 24 points as Nebraska gave new coach Connie Yori a successful debut. Four of Nebraska’s seven players were in double figures.
