Old home town – 25 and 100 years ago
In 1977 – The Lawrence United Fund drive was still a good $8,000 short of the goal of $68,000, and final contributions and pledges were coming in at a slow pace despite a deadline extension.
In 1902 – From the Lawrence Daily World of Nov. 20, 1902: “This evening marks the beginning of an important series of meetings in the city. The charity associations of the area will gather for three days here. This is an important event, and it will bring to our city earnest men and women who are working unselfishly for their less-fortunate fellows. This is especially true of one who is working for the criminals who have served their terms and are trying to start life anew. It is human nature to shun such people and it takes good people to help them get started again.”
