Maddox out of hospital

Pittsburgh – Steelers QB Tommy Maddox was released from the hospital Tuesday, with his doctor saying he has fully recovered from his head and spinal cord injuries. Despite Maddox’s remarkably quick recovery from his scary injury Sunday in Tennessee, he most likely will be sidelined at least a couple of weeks. The Steelers and Maddox’s doctor, neurosurgeon Joseph Maroon, say it is entirely up to Maddox when he returns.

Rams’ QB Bulger ailing

St. Louis – St. Louis Rams quarterback Marc Bulger won’t practice until at least Friday because of swelling in his sprained right index finger, partially deflating controversy about Kurt Warner reclaiming his starting job this week. Coach Mike Martz also said Tuesday running back Marshall Faulk, who missed Monday night’s victory against the Bears because of ankle and foot injuries, would be questionable for Sunday’s game at Washington.

Cowboys lose pair

Irving, Texas – Dallas Cowboys safety Darren Woodson and offensive lineman Larry Allen will have season-ending surgery, a move aimed at having both players fully recovered for offseason workouts. Allen, a seven-time Pro Bowl player, has played sparingly since injuring his left ankle in the second game of the season. Woodson severely strained his abdomen during Sunday’s loss at Indianapolis.

Peppers to play Sunday

Charlotte, N.C. – Julius Peppers’ appeal of his four-game suspension will not be heard by the NFL until next week, leaving Carolina’s rookie defensive end and the league sack leader eligible to play Sunday against Atlanta. Peppers’ agent, Marvin Demoff, said the league told him his client tested positive for a banned substance in a dietary supplement. Peppers, who leads the NFL with 11 sacks, played in Sunday’s loss to Tampa Bay, registering one sack.
