Eldon L. Manning

? Services for Eldon L. Manning, 91, DeSoto, will be at 11 a.m. Friday at DeSoto United Methodist Church. Burial will follow in DeSoto Cemetery.

Mr. Manning died Thursday, Nov. 14, 2002, at Eudora Nursing Center.

He was born Aug. 30, 1911, in Jet, Okla., the son of Alfred Roy and Anne Pearl (Shields) Manning. He graduated from Winfield High School, Winfield, and Central College in McPherson. He received his bachelor of science degree in business from McPherson College. He attended business college in Wichita and graduate school at Kansas University. He moved to DeSoto in 1938 from McPherson.

Mr. Manning taught business subjects at Central Junior College in McPherson and at DeSoto High School for four years. He then worked for the U.S. Postal Service for 28 years as a rural carrier in De-Soto and later as a C.F.C.A. Credit Union manager in Lawrence for more than seven years. He retired in 1976. He had been a member of DeSoto United Methodist Church since 1940. He was a Sunday School superintendent and taught the high school class for 22 years, then the adult class for three years. He was voted Outstanding Citizen of DeSoto by the Jaycees in 1973, was DeSoto City Treasurer and merit badge counselor for the Boy Scouts for 20 years. He also served eight years on the school board, where he had been a clerk and president.

He married Jewel E. Price on Dec. 24, 1935, in Nash, Okla. She died in 1986.

Survivors include a daughter, Elda Loper, Surfside Beach, S.C.; a son, Winston, McLoud, Okla.; five grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

An infant daughter, Joan Elaine, died earlier.

The family will receive friends at 10 a.m. Friday before the service.
