A. Roy Woods

? Graveside services with military honors for A. Roy Woods, 83, Ottawa, will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Centropolis.

Mr. Woods died Sunday, Nov. 17, 2002, at his home.

He was born Dec. 19, 1918, in Ottawa, the son of Oscar A. and Cordella (Smith) Woods. He was a lifelong Ottawa resident.

Mr. Woods was a barber in the late 1930s and worked at Sunflower Ordnance Plant in DeSoto before the war. He served in the U.S. Army Medical Corp from 1945 to 1946 as a medical technician. After the war, he was a farmer. He was a paint foreman at Osawatomie State Hospital from 1951 to 1960 and a paint contractor from 1960 to 1980.

He had been a member of Veteran of Foreign Wars Memorial Post 5901 in Ottawa since 1974. He was also a charter member of Night Crawler Camping Club.

He married Ruby E. Barnhart on Oct. 23, 1937, in Garnett. She survives of the home.

Other survivors include three sons, Rex, Rocky L. and Ricky D., all of Ottawa; a daughter, Rose Marie “Rea” Baxter, Lawrence; a foster son, Richard Farris, Ruidoso, N.M.; a sister, Audrey Mallory, Grandview, Mo.; a brother, Jimmy, Texas; 11 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild.

A great-granddaughter died earlier.

Friends may call from 8 a.m. today until service hour at Dengel & Son Mortuary, where family will receive friends from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. today.
