Injury Report: Pittsburgh QB Maddox leaves field in ambulance

Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Tommy Maddox was taken off the field at Tennessee by ambulance Sunday, but had movement in his extremities when he was admitted to a Nashville hospital with a bruised spinal cord and a concussion.

Maddox, 31, was hurt on the final play of the third quarter. He was taken to Baptist Hospital’s trauma unit, and Steelers spokesman Ron Wahl said Maddox was awake and alert, with sensation and movement in all his extremities.

Maddox was falling forward as he completed a pass to Antwaan Randle El when Titans linebacker Keith Bulluck put his elbow into Maddox’s left shoulder. Maddox rolled forward onto his head and did not move.

The other Pennsylvania team also saw its QB injured.

Donovan McNabb was hurt on the third play of the Eagles’ 38-14 victory against Arizona. He was sacked by Arizona’s Adrian Wilson and LeVar Woods. McNabb fumbled and stayed on the turf, clutching his right leg, but he returned on his team’s next possession and led the Eagles to the win, even though he limped throughout the game.

Eagles coach Andy Reid said the star quarterback could miss six-to-eight weeks, “if everything goes right.”

Lions wide receiver Az-Zahir Hakim will miss the rest of the season after dislocating and fracturing his left hip in the first quarter .

Denver quarterback Brian Griese sprained his left knee late in the third quarter of Sunday’s 31-9 victory at Seattle. An MRI was planned for today.

Dallas Pro Bowl safety Darren Woodson strained his right groin in the first half at Indianapolis and did not return. Colts running back Edgerrin James, who missed the previous two games with hamstring and rib injuries, left in the fourth quarter after getting his ankle rewrapped. Team officials said later that he was not injured.

Saints CB Fred Thomas was knocked out when he took a knee to the head making a tackle on Alge Crumpler at Atlanta. Thomas was motionless on the turf for several minutes, but was able to run off, although he sustained a concussion.
