Theater professor writes book for actors and directors

Though the ideas in Kansas University theater and film professor John Staniunas’ new book are his own, he still finds himself consulting the text all the time.

“It is in my head, but sometimes the way you wrote it down can often remind you,” Staniunas said. “Basically for professional directors and actors, this is a reminder book.”

Staniunas, artistic director of The University Theatre, co-wrote “Between Director and Actor: Strategies for Effective Performance” with Mandy Rees, a member of the theater faculty at California State University, Bakersfield. The book was published Nov. 1.

It contains notes a director might communicate to an actor during the rehearsal process. The notes are arranged in categories such as structuring a scene, achieving vocal clarity, and maintaining pace, flow and believability. The text also includes an interview section in which professional directors and actors offer practical advice.

Staniunas teaches directing, acting and musical theater at KU. He is currently directing George Bernard Shaw’s “You Never Can Tell.”
