IN 1977

Cecil Andrus, U.S. Secretary of the Interior, made a brief stop in Lawrence and defended president Jimmy Carter’s energy proposals, which were getting increasing Republican congressional criticism.

Andrus, here on Haskell Indian Junior College maters, held a press conference focusing on energy proposals and ways to conserve energy and find alternative sources. He said the Carter program had the nation moving in the right direction.

IN 1962

Five students at Lawrence High were Summerfield-Watkins scholarship finalists at Kansas University. They were Dan Brune, Alan Hitt, Don Malone, Catherine Hyder and Judith Thompson.
