Bond issue spending likely cut, Weseman says

Supt. Randy Weseman said the Lawrence school board would probably trim bond-issue spending proposals to less than $63.3 million.

“It’s certainly not going to go up,” he said. “The discussion I’ve been witnessing is how can you bring that down a little bit.”

The board meets at 7 p.m. Monday at district headquarters, 110 McDonald Drive, to outline what should be included in a bond issue. The issue probably would go before voters in April.

DLR Group, an Overland Park consulting firm hired by the board to help devise a 20-year master plan and development of a bond issue, prepared a summary of proposed district facility improvements.

Projects are expected to be added and subtracted by the time the board votes on a final package, Weseman said.

The tentative $63.3 million list:

l High schools: $20.1 million for significant renovation of Lawrence High School and expansion of the Lawrence Alternative High School; less than $1 million for improvements at Free State High School.

l Junior high schools: $28.8 million to replace South Junior High School and to build additions at the three other schools to eliminate the need for portable classrooms.

l Elementary schools: $14.4 million to expand Cordley and New York schools to accommodate consolidation of Centennial and East Heights, to build additions at five schools to replace portables and to make modest improvements at other schools.
