Big 12 Roundup: Red Raiders shock ‘Horns

? Texas had no answer for Kliff Kingsbury, and now there’s no chance for a Big 12 Conference or national title.

Kingsbury threw for 473 yards and six touchdowns against one of the nation’s top defenses, helping Texas Tech upset the fourth-ranked Longhorns 42-38 on Saturday.

“We tried everything and he whipped everything we tried,” Texas coach Mack Brown said. “We’re really disappointed, but give them credit.”

While Kingsbury ended Texas’ title hopes, he also lifted Texas Tech (8-4, 5-2) into the Big 12 South race.

The Red Raiders visit co-No. 4 Oklahoma (9-1, 5-1) next Saturday, with the winner taking the division and advancing to the Big 12 title game on Dec. 7.

To beat the Sooners, “we just have to do the same like we did today,” Tech coach Mike Leach said. “We need to get a lot of first downs, make good punts and complete passes.”

The defeat was another tough blow for Texas (9-2, 5-2) and coach Mack Brown. A loss to Oklahoma last month all but eliminated the Longhorns from the conference race, but they still had a chance of reaching the BCS national title game in the Fiesta Bowl on Jan. 3.

That’s gone, too.

“They all hurt anytime you lose,” said Texas quarterback Chris Simms, who threw for 345 yards and four TD passes. “This one hurts a lot. To be so close and have things fall the way they did, it’s tough.”

Tech went ahead 42-38 on a 25-yard pass from Kingsbury to Taurean Henderson with 5:41 left.

Simms tried to lead Texas back, but Texas Tech safety Ryan Aycock intercepted a pass intended for B.J. Johnson with 5:21 remaining to seal the win.

“I was just trying to go in the middle, and I got bumped by a linebacker,” Johnson said. “By the time I got turned around in there, Chris had already thrown the ball. The rest is history.”

Missouri 33, Texas A&M 27, 2OT

College Station, Texas – Brad Smith’s 1-yard touchdown run in the second overtime helped Missouri overcome blowing a two-touchdown halftime lead to beat Texas A&M.

Smith also threw two TD passes for the Tigers (5-6, 2-5), who were coming off a 42-35 overtime loss against Colorado.

The Aggies (6-5, 3-4) were trying to follow up their victory over top-ranked Oklahoma with another victory, and they had the ball first in the second overtime. But they failed to score when Missouri cornerback Michael Harden intercepted Dustin Long’s pass.

Long replaced injured starter Reggie McNeal in the second quarter and helped Texas A&M rally to tie the game at 24 in regulation. Joe Weber scored his second touchdown from the 1-yard line with 15 seconds left.

No. 17 CU 41, Iowa St. 27

Boulder, Colo. – Bobby Purify ran for 174 yards, including a 5-yard touchdown with 1:43 left, to lift Colorado.

Colorado advanced to the conference title game for the second straight year.

The Buffaloes managed to hold off Iowa State (7-5, 4-4) despite losing Chris Brown, the nation’s leading rusher who departed because of a bruised sternum after carrying 25 times for 127 yards and a touchdown.

Iowa State quarterback Seneca Wallace had 367 totals yards, 265 passing.

No. 4 OU 49, Baylor 9

Waco, Texas –Quentin Griffin ran for 152 yards and three touchdowns and also had a 35-yard TD reception, helping No. 4 Oklahoma (9-1, 5-1) rebound from its first loss.

Griffin continued his push for serious Heisman Trophy consideration with his sixth straight 100-yard rushing game, on 17 carries in just three quarters. Griffin has 1,243 yards on the season.

Baylor (3-8, 1-6) has been outscored 271-30 while losing six straight games.
