Musharraf sworn in for new 5-year term
Islamabad, Pakistan ? Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf, an army general who seized power in a coup and has become a key ally in the U.S.-led campaign against al-Qaida, was sworn in today for another five years in office.
Pakistan’s newly elected Parliament is also set to be sworn in today, bringing to an end three years of army rule and starting this poor country on its shaky road back to democracy.
General elections last month resulted in a hung Parliament with no single party winning a majority.
Pakistan’s religious right, which came in third in the elections, has emerged as the power broker in negotiations.
It’s still not clear who will form the government. A vote for a new government is expected to be held Tuesday.
