Adam and Jamie Gabriel, Lawrence, announce the birth of their son, Matthew Jordan Gabriel, Oct. 15, 2002, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.

Maternal grandparents are Vicki Jordan, Valley Center, and Randy and Vickie Jordan, Tulsa, Okla. Paternal grandparents are Mark and Janet Gabriel, Eudora.

Great-grandparents are Elsie Moore, Baldwin; Richard Folks Sr., Bonner Springs, and Barbara Jordan, Russell.

  • Jason and Kara Spurling, Olathe, announce the birth of their daughter, Rachel Elizabeth Spurling, Aug. 29, 2002, at Providence Medical Center in Kansas City, Kan.

Maternal grandparents are Janice Richardson and Mike Richardson, both of Lawrence. Paternal grandparents are Merl and Karla Spurling, Grantville. Great-grandmother is Alice Richardson, Shawnee.

  • Ian Cahir and Jill Jess-Cahir, Roseville, Calif., announce the birth of their daughter, Alida Maria Cahir, Oct. 14, 2002, in Sacramento, Calif. She has a brother, Aidan, 2.

Paternal grandparent is Connie Anderson, Highland, Calif. Maternal grandparents are Paul and Jan Jess, Lawrence. Great-grandparent is Maria Monge, Highland, Calif.

  • Family and friends are having a card shower for Alice Johnson who will celebrate her 97th birthday Tuesday. Johnson lived most of her life in Lawrence and was in the real estate business. This summer she moved to California to live with her daughter. Cards may be sent to her at 3601 Jackie Lane, Shingle Springs, Calif. 95682.
  • JoAnn Van Hoesen, Lawrence, will celebrate her 75th birthday Thursday. She grew up in Douglas County and has lived most of her life in the area. She is an avid gardener and has worked in a variety of nurseries and florist shops. She has been a host mother for Kansas University international students for more than 30 years and is a former chairwoman for the Host Family Program. Hoesen is a member and former president of the Kaw Valley BlueBird Assn. She also was active as a Cub Scout and Girl Scout leader for many years.

Her son and daughter-in-law are Bob and Barbara Van Hoesen; and her daughter and son-in-law are Cheryl and Les Harrod, all of Lawrence. She has four grandchildren.

  • Sylvia Frank’s summer music class entertained residents of Presbyterian Manor Tuesday with a musical play, “Pansy to the Rescue.” The story was written by Emily Keizer, a sixth-grade student at Schwegler School. The cast featured Emily Keizer, Patrick Keizer, Nolan Frank, Garrett Frank, Megan Andrews, Erin Ice and Marley Sutter. Refreshments mentioned in the play were served to the audience by Ann Keizer after the play.
  • Eric Daigh, formerly of Lawrence, is the new Colorado broadcast editor for The Associated Press. Daigh, a 1984 Lawrence High School graduate and a 1989 graduate of Kansas University’s School of Journalism, serves more than 120 member ratio and television stations in Colorado with daily broadcast reports.

Before joining the Associated Press, Daigh was the longtime morning and noon news anchor for KHGI-TV, an ABC affiliate in Kearney, Neb. He also worked in Wausau, Wis., and at KSNT-TV in Topeka.

He is the son of Richard and Marjorie Daigh, Lawrence.

  • The Lawrence Accredited Music Teachers Assn. will have a piano recital at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Lawrence Arts Center, 940 N.H. The following students will perform in the recital: Carl Palmquist, Siel Snowden, Cal Young, Hannah Lush, Maddelyn Bailey, Naomi Kurata, Alan Shi, Ken Kurta, Nathan de Noyelles, Mia Butler, Kristen Capps, Hsing-yi Pan, Bill Butler, Zach Stites, Betty Zhang, Eric Palmquist, Boning Zhang, Samantha Schueler, Adrienne Willems and Flora Jiang. The teachers who represent the students are Sue Kwak, Elaine de San Miguel, Carol Cook and Jean Drumm. Pat Burgstahler will be in charge.
  • Catherine Kelly, Lawrence, received a $1,000 college scholarship from the publisher of “Who’s Who Among American High School Students.” Kelly will attend Washington University in St. Louis.
  • Brad Williamson, son of Bruce Williamson and Robin Williamson, both of Lawrence, is a member of the Wichita State University Symphonic Wind Ensemble.
