s Hawkins healthy

Kansas University basketball coach Roy Williams spent 19 minutes on a treadmill-endurance test as part of a recent physical examination.

Jayhawk red-shirt freshman Jeff Hawkins spent 20 minutes on the treadmill Wednesday during a physical exam scheduled after Hawkins felt chest pains during TuesdayâÂÂs exhibition game against Washburn.

âÂÂCoach told me he got 19. I knew I had to get better than 19, so I wouldnâÂÂt hear it from him,â Hawkins said.

Hawkins was given a clean bill of health by doctors Ãi¿½” who thought the chest pains could have resulted from a recent sore throat mixed with the adrenaline from playing a game Ãi¿½” and was giddy Wednesday when he informed Williams of his performance.

âÂÂI told him, âÂÂ’Congratulations, heâÂÂs competing with a 52-year-old has-been,âÂÂâ Williams said. âÂÂI told him not to get too cocky about it. He felt very good, very relieved. All of us were relieved.

âÂÂI think he had a touch of the bug. We got out there and he hadnâÂÂt done it very often in the last year and a half. He got a little winded and felt a little pain and I think it alarmed him.âÂÂ

Hawkins, a 5-foot-11 guard, said the treadmill test was difficult.

âÂÂEvery three minutes the incline goes up,â he said. âÂÂI started walking and in the ninth minute jogging. It was kind of tough. IâÂÂm not going to lie. I was tired.âÂÂ

Hawkins said he definitely âÂÂhurtâ during TuesdayâÂÂs game.

âÂÂI was never scared. I knew something was wrong, but it wasnâÂÂt that scary,â he said.

Meanwhile, sophomore forward Wayne Simien has been practicing some in preparation for next TuesdayâÂÂs NIT opener against Holy Cross at 8 p.m. in Allen Fieldhouse. Simien has been bothered by tendinitis in his right ankle, and Williams said he wants Simien to have âÂÂgood practicesâ Sunday and Monday.
