Bonds slam propels all-stars past Japanese

? Barry Bonds keeps supplying the power, just like he did all year.

Bonds hit a go-ahead grand slam in the sixth inning, his fifth homer in the first five games of the tour, to lead major league all-stars to a 6-5 win Thursday against their Japanese counterparts.

With the major leagues trailing 4-2, Bonds connected off reliever Hirotoshi Ishii. The major leaguers, who beat the Yomiuri Giants in the opener of the eight-game tour, are 1-3 against the Japanese all-stars.

“We’re just trying to win,” Bonds said. “We haven’t won a game and we needed one. We had a chance to face him before, so I had a better idea against him this time.

Bonds and Hideki Matsui, the free agent outfielder coveted by the New York Yankees, will have a home-run hitting contest before today’s game at Tokyo Dome, with each batter getting 20 swings.

“We’re here for the fans,” Bonds said. “If I could hit one in every park, I’d be happy, and I’m proud to be able to do it here.”

The major leaguers trailed 4-1 going into the sixth but loaded the bases against Chang Chih-Chia on two-out singles by Eric Chavez and Ichiro Suzuki and a walk by David Eckstein. Bernie Williams walked, forcing in a run, Ishii relieved and Bonds homered to right-center on a 2-0 pitch.

Kazuhiro Wada scored in the sixth on a wild pitch by Rodrigo Lopez, who won despite allowing three runs and five hits in 22â3 innings.

Matsui went 0-for-4, dropping to 3-for-21 (.143) in the series. He just missed what would have been his first homer of the series when he flied to the warning tack in the seventh.

Japan’s all-stars, who outscored the major leaguers 24-12 in the previous three games, loaded the bases in the bottom of the eighth, but Eric Gagne retired Norihiro Nakamura on an inning-ending grounder. Gagne finished for the save.
