Union urges approval of Boeing’s contract offers

? The union representing Boeing’s engineering and technical workers is recommending approval of the company’s “best and final” contract offers, which include salary and pension increases and a 6 percent ratification bonus.

Employees also are asked to share more medical costs in the proposals for two of three contracts under negotiation by the Chicago-based aerospace company and the Society of Professional Engineering Employees in Aerospace.

The offers cap two weeks of intensive negotiations.

Boeing Commercial Airplanes chief executive Alan Mulally said the contracts are “very competitive (and) will continue to attract and keep the finest engineering and technical work force in the world.”

SPEEA leaders recommended approval, though they were disappointed with the medical-care increases.

“We believe with the economic situation that the industry is in right now, that it’s a fair contract,” said Dave Landress, chair of the negotiations team for technical workers.
