McNabb struggling since $115 million deal

? Donovan McNabb hasn’t been the same quarterback since he signed the richest contract in NFL history.

Is it a case of too much pressure? Or is just coincidence?

Whatever the reason, McNabb has struggled in the six games since the Philadelphia Eagles gave him a $115 million, 12-year contract extension after Week 3.

McNabb, a two-time Pro Bowl selection, completed 68 of 111 passes (61.3 percent) for 791 yards, eight TDs and two interceptions in the first three games. He also ran for 118 yards and two TDs. Since then, he is 123-for-225 (54.6 percent) for 1,243 yards, five TDs, three interceptions and has 342 yards rushing and four TDs on the ground.

Three of his combined nine TDs in the last six games have come after the outcome was decided. His average yards passing per game is down from 264 to 207, and his quarterback rating of 81.4 is 21st in the league.

In Sunday’s 35-13 loss to the Indianapolis Colts, McNabb was 27-of-47 for 281 yards and one touchdown. But he was only 15-for-31 for 158 yards before garbage time, and also fumbled twice and dropped a crucial pass on a fourth-and-1 in the third quarter.

Still, Eagles coach Andy Reid doesn’t see a problem.

“You’ve got to give credit to the defense and then I’ve got to take some of the blame on that,” Reid said. “I’ve got to do a better job of getting him the plays so people can get open and not have to make all the tight throws.”

McNabb’s first four passes against Indianapolis sailed high over open receivers. He threw low to Duce Staley on a fourth-and-1 from the Colts 6. With James Thrash open in the end zone in the second quarter, he threw a pass too hard when more touch was needed. The pass went through Thrash’s hands.

“I think he’s OK mechanically,” Reid said. “You’re going to have a shot here or there that you don’t hit on. Whether it’s somebody in the throwing lane, there are all kinds of different things that happen out there. I’m not saying that he’s not high on a few. Those are the things that go into it also.”
