Top 25 Roundup: Syracuse rallies against Hokies

No. 3 Ohio State overcomes Purdue

? Syracuse appeared to be on its way to a rare and dubious distinction just one month ago – winning 10 games one season and losing 10 the next.

A three-game winning streak has changed all that.

Freshman Damien Rhodes scored on a 25-yard run and ran for the 2-point conversion in the decisive third overtime Saturday as the Orangemen pulled off a dramatic 50-42 victory over No. 8 Virginia Tech.

Virginia Tech (8-2, 3-2 Big East) lost despite 504 yards passing and a school-record five touchdown passes from Bryan Randall. Randall’s yardage total was the second-best in school history, behind Don Strock’s 527-yard performance against Houston in 1972.

It was another big win for Syracuse (4-6, 2-3).

“To beat Virginia Tech at home, when everyone else had given up on you, this was like a bowl game for us,” Syracuse tight end Joe Donnelly said. “To come back in a game like this, that’s a big test of character.”

The Hokies, who lost to Pittsburgh last week, cannot win the league and lost any chance of going to a BCS bowl game.

The Boilermakers (4-6, 2-4 Big Ten) were leading 6-3 when Krenzel dropped back and found Jenkins for an over-the-shoulder catch in the end zone. Purdue got the ball again, but Kyle Orton’s long pass into double coverage was intercepted by Chris Gamble.

Ohio State's Michael Jenkins, right, catches a 37-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Craig Krenzel over Purdue's Antwaun Rogers with 1:36 remaining. The third-ranked Buckeyes came from behind to defeat the Boilermakers, 10-6, Saturday in West Lafayette, Ind.

Before the final play, the Wildcats doused coach Guy Morriss with a cooler of Gatorade. With 2 seconds left, Randall took the snap, avoided the rush to his right, and heaved a desperation pass down the field. As the ball sailed through the air, fireworks exploded out of the Kentucky scoreboard and Wildcat fans attacked the goal post at the east end zone. At the other end, Kentucky linebacker Morris Lane tipped the ball and Henderson caught it inside the 20, running the rest of the way for the score.
