Rain pleases duck hunters

Waterfowl season is in full swing in parts of Kansas, and waterfowl hunters are happy. Plentiful rainfall the past month has filled ponds and lakes and left sheet water throughout much of the state.

Also, cooler weather the past two weeks has forced waterfowl south from Canada and the Dakotas. The result is plenty of ducks and plenty of places to hold them.

Mallards and Canada geese are being reported in good numbers, which are expected to build into January.

Unusually large numbers of snow geese are also being reported, even in areas west of their traditional migration, such as Cheyenne Bottoms and Quivira NWR.

The six-duck daily bag limit may include no more than one pintail, one mottled duck, two wood ducks, two redheads, two scaup or five mallards, of which only one may be a hen.

The possession limit on all ducks is two daily bag limits. Non-toxic shot is required for all waterfowl species
