Cole happy with record, not result

? It was a memorable moment for Greg Cole in a game the Kansas University football team would rather forget.

KUâÂÂs senior co-captain set a school single-season record Saturday at Nebraska when he tackled running back Cory Ross for a three-yard loss in the third quarter. It was the linebackerâÂÂs 21st tackle for loss this season, breaking the record of 201âÂÂ2 set by Ron Warner in 1997.

âÂÂIâÂÂm happy for myself, as far as the record,â Cole said. âÂÂI worked really hard. ItâÂÂs an accomplishment for myself.âÂÂ

Cole wasnâÂÂt as happy about the final score. The 45-7 loss was the Jayhawksâ sixth in a row. KUâÂÂs defense allowed 414 total yards, including 352 rushing.

Nebraska had six plays of 25 yards or more, including four running plays in the first quarter.

âÂÂWe knew they were going to run the ball and be physical,â Cole said. âÂÂWe had to stop that, and we didnâÂÂt. They made plays. We didnâÂÂt.âÂÂ

Cole did what he could with nine tackles, including his fifth sack of the season.

The senior from Hutchinson Community College is KUâÂÂs leading tackler with 99 and also has an interception, a pass breakup and a blocked field goal to his credit.

Cole was encouraging his teammates in the locker room after the loss, looking ahead to the season finale against Oklahoma State.

âÂÂThose are the kinds of kids you need on your ballclub,â KU coach Mark Mangino said. âÂÂMy only regret is that heâÂÂs gone after this year.âÂÂ

KU (2-9, 0-7 Big 12) hopes to end a season filled with losses with a victory against OSU (4-5, 2-3) on senior day at Memorial Stadium.

âÂÂNext week is the last game,â Cole said. âÂÂWeâÂÂre going to play all out, give it everything weâÂÂve got. WeâÂÂve got nothing to lose.âÂÂ

SaturdayâÂÂs kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
