Sandra Johnson, Lawrence, has joined the Lawrence office of Express Personnel Service as a sales representative. Johnson has more than five years of sales experience.

David Clark has joined Lawrence Bank as an assistant vice president. Clark previously was a branch manager for Wells Fargo Financial. He is a graduate of Kansas University.

Larry Northrop of Realty Executives-Hedges Real Estate in Lawrence, completed courses in Georgia, Colorado, Oklahoma and Kansas to achieve the CRS designation. This is considered “the highest designation in real estate” and is in addition to other education requirements.

Star Signs & Graphics, Lawrence, has hired Jason Grove as production manager. Grove has 13 years of experience in the sign industry in San Francisco.

Robert Underwood, who has been with Star Signs & Graphics for 19 years, remains in the position of vice president of operations. Debi Gilley remains director of purchasing.

The Production Department recently restructured as a team environment, creating department team lead positions. Employees who were promoted as team leads were: Joe Cummings, fabrication; Alan Gardner, installation at Lawrence; Denny Heilig, installation at Kansas City; Fernando Alvarez, graphics; Jared Ellis, paint department; and Harold Updike, neon department.

Lawrence La Leche League Leaders Sue Reiske, Tess Foster and Jane Tuttle attended a continuing education program for LLL Leaders Nov. 2 in Salina. The program focused on how to improve services to nursing mothers and their families through the mother-to-mother support offered by La Leche League Leaders.

Travellers Inc., 831 Mass., announces the addition of Ruth Hughes, former owner of Holiday Travel, as a travel consultant. Hughes has 22 years of experience in travel consulting. Megan Richardson, Hughes daughter, also joined the sales staff of Travellers.

Christopher Sook, Lawrence, has joined the law firm Sloan, Listrom, Eisenbarth, Sloan & Glassman, Topeka. Sook received his juris doctorate degree in May 2002 from Kansas University’s School of Law.

Wendy Doyle has joined Partners in Philanthropy, a fund-raising and nonprofit management consulting firm based in Topeka. Doyle will provide advice in capital campaigns, major and planned gifts and constituent communications. She will work out of the Lawrence office, 805 N.H. Doyle previously served as national development director for the National Kidney Foundation. She serves as vice president and member of the board of directors of the Council on Philanthropy in Kansas City.

A six-month comprehensive look at the diversity and future of Kansas culminated Nov. 1 in Topeka for 35 Kansas leaders. The 24th annual Leadership Kansas graduation and alumni reunion drew nearly 200 attendees.

From May to October, Leadership Kansas class members traveled the state and examined such areas as agriculture, vocational education, business development, tourism, law enforcement and state government.

Area Leadership Kansas 2002 graduates were: Barb Reavis, Berryton; Royce Powelson, Richmond, and Deborah Rose, Overbrook.

Teresa Clounch and Shirley Martin-Smith, both of Lawrence, were recognized for completing their terms on the Leadership Kansas Board of Trustees.

As part of the graduation ceremony, a Leadership Kansas Alumnus of the Year is recognized. Andy Tompkins, Kansas Commissioner of Education, received the award for 2002. This year the award was renamed the “Jim Edwards Leadership Kansas Alumnus of the Year” on behalf of Edwards, who is leaving his post as director of the program after 20 years. Edwards also received a Lifetime Achievement Award for his dedication to the future leaders of the state.

Brian Cahill has been named vice president of finance and administration and chief financial officer at MGP Ingredients, Atchison. For the past 10 years, Cahill has served as general manager of the company’s operations in Pekin, Ill. He also spent 17 years as vice president of finance and administration at the Pekin plant.

Cahill succeeds Bob Booe who retired in October after 36 years with the company.

Rosalie McMaster of Teakwood Psychological Resources, Lawrence, recently attended the seminar “Managing Depression to Improve Diabetes Outcome. The seminar was sponsored by the Kansas Medical Education Foundation.

The Kansas Real Estate Commission has launched a new interactive Web application that will allow its licensees to check their continuing education units. The CEU verification application was launched in conjunction with the release of the newly redesigned KREC Web site at www.accesskansas. org/krec.

Dana White, a registered occupational therapist and certified hand therapist at Kreider Rehabilitation Services at Lawrence Memorial Hospital, participated in a professional education program. She attended the 25th American Society of Hand Therapists meeting Sept. 18-21 in Ottawa, Ontario.

Honors and awards

Jon Isaacs, Lawrence, of Schendel Pest Control recently was awarded a 2002 Leadership Award at the National Pest Management Assn. convention in Orlando, Fla. The award honors individuals who have made significant contributions to the pest control industry.

Isaacs began working for Schendel in 1965 and held several positions before retiring in spring 2002. He spent his career working in the Lawrence and Kansas City offices. He is part owner of the company and serves as corporate secretary.

Sharon Porter, Nortonville, was named Kansas Secondary Business Educator of the Year at the Kansas Business Education Assn. convention in Wichita. Porter has taught business and computer courses at Jefferson County North High School in Winchester for 29 years.

Porter also is Future Business Leaders of America adviser and state convention chairwoman. She was recognized as Kansas FBLA Adviser of the Year in 1985 and 1995 as well as inducted to the “Adviser Wall of Fame” at the National FBLA Headquarters in 1995.

Coming events

Let’s Help Inc. is sponsoring an employment program for people who are 55 or older through the Older Kansan Employment Program Job Club. The following programs are scheduled: job search, Wednesday; interviewing techniques, Nov. 20; mock interviewing, Dec. 4; and resumes for the older worker, Dec. 11.

The 2002 Kansas Rural Policy Symposium will be Nov. 21 at Kansas State University in Manhattan. The symposium aims to raise awareness and stimulate dialog on rural policy issues. This year’s symposium is called “Building Border to Border Prosperity: A Memo to the New Governor.” The event will include presentations and panel discussions. The agenda can be found by clicking on www.ksu.edu/kcri/rps. The symposium will produce a set of recommendations that will be delivered to the newly elected governor.

A National Philanthropy Day seminar and luncheon will be from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday at the Topeka-Shawnee County Public Library. The event will be sponsored by the Topeka Chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals. The program will feature Alexander Sandy Macnab, a nationally recognized expert on nonprofit fund raising. Macnab began the company that bears his name after 25 years as a development professional. He will focus on the art of major gift fund raising.

The Lawrence Memorial Hospital Endowment Assn. is presenting an estate planning seminar from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Nov. 19 at the LMH Auditorium.

“The Family Wins When IRD Is Used for Charitable Bequests” will be presented by Christopher Hoyt, a professor of law at the University of Missouri-Kansas City.
