Calvary Temple Assembly of God

A spiritual emphasis meeting with Stewart and Sondra VanArsdale of Springfield, Mo., will be at 6:30 p.m. Sunday through Tuesday at Calvary Temple Assembly of God, 606 W. 29th St. Terrace.

The VanArsdales, who work with literature development for missionaries, will speak and preach during the special meetings. Because of the meetings, Bible study will not be held Wednesday evening.

First Church of the Nazarene, 1470 N. 1000 Road, will have a special “Sunday Night of Worship” at 6 p.m. Sunday. The Rev. Dan Steele and his wife, Carolyn Steele, will lead an evening of music, and the Rev. Donald Dunn, senior pastor, will give a short devotional.

Healing Streams Divine Healing Room

Healing Streams Divine Healing Room has opened in Lawrence at 2518 Ridge Court, Room D. Hours are from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. Fridays. The room is open to anyone seeking healing of body, mind, soul or spirit.

Lawrence Baha’i Community

The Lawrence Baha’i Community has moved its Sunday worship service to Unity Church of Lawrence, Ninth and Madeline Lane. Services will be 7 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

The Baha’i Community will celebrate the birthday of Baha’u’llah (founder of the faith) at 7:30 p.m. Monday at the Old Lawrence Depot (the Lawrence Visitor Information Center, 402 N. Second St.).

People of all faiths are invited to attend.

Museum of Christian History

The Museum of Christian History, 2518 Ridge Court, Suite 253, is offering a six-part video overview on the history of Christianity, narrated by Timothy George of Beeson Divinity School.

The overview is offered on an individual or group basis, facilitated by Will Spann, director of the Museum of Christian History. Cost is $10 per person, and a study guide is included.

Mustard Seed Christian Fellowship

Mustard Seed Christian Fellowship, 700 Wakarusa, will have a special service to honor the congregation’s veterans at 10 a.m. Sunday. The guest speaker will be Randy Gunnip, senior vice president of the Gunnip Group of Fort Worth, Texas. He is also vice-chairman of the International Fellowship of Christian Businessmen.

The Alpha Course will have a celebration potluck dinner at 6:30 p.m. Nov. 19 at the church. Anyone interested in learning more about Christianity is welcome to attend the informational meeting.

Ottawa University

Ottawa University has announced the inauguration of its Faith, Learning and Life Presidential Lecture Series, which will feature three speakers each year. The series will highlight issues of faith, lifelong learning and services as they relate to developing leaders in society.

Noted author and commentator Dinesh D’Souza will be the first speaker in the series. On Dec. 3, D’Souza will discuss “What’s So Great About America,” based on his recent book of the same title.

The presentation, which is open to the public, will be during a luncheon at the Overland Park Marriott, 10800 Metcalf Ave.

D’Souza’s book examines various critiques of America, including the Islamic critique, and makes a case for intelligent patriotism.

The Rev. Vern Barnet, minister in residence for the Center for Religious Experience and Study and an Ottawa University adjunct professor, will moderate a discussion session with the audience.

Among the invitees is Ahmed El-Sharif, founder of the American Muslim Council of Kansas City.

Cost to attend is $35 per person; checks must be mailed by Nov. 18 in order to hold reservations. Seating is limited.

Plymouth Congregational

The senior seminar youth of Plymouth Congregational Church, 925 Vt., will lead a special Gathering of Grace service at 11:15 a.m. Sunday. The theme will be “Peacemaking,” with a dramatic presentation, a sermon and music focusing on this theme.

St. Margaret’s Episcopal

St. Margaret’s Annual Progressive Dinner will take place tonight.

The Poulenc Trio from KU will offer uplifting instrumental music at the 10:45 a.m. Sunday worship services at St. Margaret’s Episcopal Church, 5700 W. Sixth St. The trio includes: Paul Jensen, piano; Susan Nelson, bassoon; Tricia DiShon, oboe.

St. Margaret’s and its youth ministry will host the inaugural Battle of the Bands at 6:30 p.m. Friday at the church. This youth-led fund-raiser for missions trips costs $5 and includes music by five bands. Young people in the community who are in junior high or older are invited to attend.

Registration for the Sexual Awareness Training Workshop is taking place for those who work with children and youth. The workshop will be 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Nov. 23. Early registration is necessary.

The Salvation Army

The Women’s Ministries of The Salvation Army, 946 N.H., will have a guest speaker at its 5 p.m. Wednesday meeting. Judy Hollingshead of the American Cancer Society will give a presentation on surviving breast cancer.

Trinity Episcopal

The Annual Ploughman’s Lunch, Bake Sale and Trinity Treasures Sale will be Thursday. Lunch is served from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., and tickets may be purchased at the door. Cost is $6 per person. The meal includes a choice of white chicken chili, broccoli cheese soup or French onion soup; a piece of French bread; a wedge of cheddar cheese; apple pie; and coffee.

Trinity Lutheran

Trinity Lutheran Church, 1245 N.H., will receive 45 new members during the 11 a.m. Sunday worship service. A potluck dinner honoring the new members and their sponsors will be served in the fellowship hall after the service.

The Rev. Dennis Hallemeier, regional gift planner for the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, will be the guest preacher Sunday.

Chris Wootton, a student of organ at Kansas University, is the new interim organist for Sunday worship services at Trinity Lutheran.

Sandy Cooper will direct the children’s choirs, assisted by Romaine Taylor and Norma Olson.

Existing staff members have also received new assignments. LaDonna Atchison, formerly director of Learning and Family ministries, is the parish administrator to facilitate information and coordination of parish programs.

Brad Richardson, the current sexton, will have his duties revised to become property manager with the responsibilities of supervising all part-time and contracted work at the church.

West Side Presbyterian

Pledges for the 2003 church year will be dedicated during the 11 a.m. worship services Sunday at West Side Presbyterian Church, 1024 Kasold Drive, as the final commitment in their covenant with God.

Four different life perspectives have been emphasized during the campaign to define the congregation’s relationship with God: personal, public, community and financial.

All members are urged to attend this service.
