IN 1977

An expanding investigation was under way into the apparent homicide of Vanera Smith, 84. Police Chief Richard Stanwix said Mrs. Smith, a lifelong resident of Lawrence, was found dead at her home by a neighbor.An autopsy showed she had suffered a skull fracture and several broken ribs. Police had not made any arrests to date.

From the Lawrence Daily World, Nov. 9, 1902: “Because there has been a general turning to the Republican Party, particularly the recent elections, it is more important than ever that the majority party and its people should use its lease of power wisely and judiciously. The tariff campaign is a major factor to be consider. The Republicans have a great chance to get something important done and should seize the opportunity.”
