Wack-y pick: ISU over K-State

HereâÂÂs todayâÂÂs pop quiz, football fans:

1. Who was president the last time Kansas defeated Nebraska in football?

a) Millard Fillmore

b) Lyndon Johnson

c) Juan Peron

d) John Quincy Adams

2. Who was the Jayhawksâ quarterback that day?

a) Mike Bohn

b) Bobby Skahan

c) Bobby Douglass

d) Scrubby Laslett

3. Who were the coaches?

a) Fielding Yost and Bummy Booth

b) Pepper Rodgers and Bob Devaney

c) Glen Mason and Tom Osborne

d) Bill Hargiss and Dana X. Bible

OK, thatâÂÂs enough of that. You get the picture.

ItâÂÂs been a long, long time since Oct. 12, 1968 Ãi¿½” Lyndon Johnson was a lame-duck president then Ãi¿½” when Kansas went to Lincoln and Bobby Douglass guided the Pepper Rodgers-coached Jayhawks to a 23-13 victory over Bob DevaneyâÂÂs Cornhuskers.

On Saturday, Nebraska will extend its win streak against Kansas to 34 even though the Huskers are as beatable as theyâÂÂve been in the last three decades. Unfortunately, at the same time, Kansas has its worst team since 1988.

Anyway, donâÂÂt forget to enter this weekâÂÂs âÂÂWe Whacked Woodlingâ contest on the Web at kusports.com. Somehow IâÂÂve missed only one game over the last month Ãi¿½” NebraskaâÂÂs victory at Texas A&M two weeks ago Ãi¿½” but I promise youâÂÂll have a better chance this week because IâÂÂm picking some real doozies.

How about Iowa State over Kansas State? And A&M over Oklahoma? Yes, and Missouri over Colorado, too.

This is your chance, folks. Get on the Web and whack me. ItâÂÂs a cinch.

Here are this weekâÂÂs predictions:

Missouri 39, Colorado 37 Ãi¿½” Tigers throw monkey wrench into Big 12 North race by stunning Buffaloes. Mizzou defense canâÂÂt stop Buffs, but MU QB Brad Smith and WR Justin Gage too much for CU defenders.

Texas 59, Baylor 0 Ãi¿½” Last year Kansas fired coach Terry Allen before the Texas game. This year Baylor fired coach Kevin Steele before the Texas game. Only difference: Allen didnâÂÂt have to coach his team for the remainder of the season. Steele does.

Texas Tech 49, Oklahoma State 15 Ãi¿½” Red Raiders could be looking ahead to next weekâÂÂs showdown with Texas, but I doubt it. Incredible stat: Tech averaging 51.0 points a game at home, and this game is in Lubbock.

Texas A&M 27, Oklahoma 23 Ãi¿½” Sooners ripe for loss after climbing to No. 1 spot in BCS poll, and what better team to upset the apple cart than the enigmatic Aggies? A&M Wrecking Crew defense returns after two-week vacation.

Iowa State 22, Kansas State 19 Ãi¿½” Wildcats come back to earth after back-to-back blowouts of Baylor and Kansas. ISU quarterback Seneca Wallace returns to Heisman radar screen. Bad news: Cyclones have to go to Colorado next week.

Nebraska 59, Kansas 0 Ãi¿½” Cornhuskers can name score just like Kansas State did last Saturday in Lawrence. Mark Mangino wasnâÂÂt promised a rose garden, but heâÂÂs working at cultivating one by cutting away thorns and nurturing buds.
