A dog that attacked a 7-year-old boy Sunday has been euthanized and is being examined for rabies by experts at Kansas State University, Lawrence Police said.

When police finish their report on the incident it will be reviewed by Lawrence Municipal Court prosecutors, Sgt. Doug Bell said.

He said he wasnâÂÂt sure any laws were violated.

âÂÂThe dog was in its own back yard,â said Bell, who supervises the Police DepartmentâÂÂs Animal Control Unit. âÂÂIt wasnâÂÂt running loose. Of course, the final decision will be up to prosecutors. ItâÂÂs a very gray area.âÂÂ

The euthanization was voluntary on the part of the owner, police said. The owner could not be reached for comment.

Until the mauling incident, the 8-year-old Rottweiler reportedly had not shown any signs of rabies, Bell said.

The boy, Tanner Marroquin, was released Wednesday from ChildrenâÂÂs Mercy Hospital in Kansas City, Mo. He suffered injuries to his shoulder and upper arm, police said.

Tanner lived next door to where the dog was being kept in the back yard at 1604 W. 21st Terrace. The owner of the dog lives at a different address.

Police said the owner told them he had adopted the dog several months ago from Lawrence Humane Society.

Midge Grinstead, Humane Society director, said the dog had all of its shots except a rabies shot when it was adopted. Rabies shots are not given at the animal shelter because they have to be administered by a veterinarian, Grinstead said.

âÂÂWe are very clear about that,â she said.

Grinstead remembered the dog.

âÂÂShe passed the temperament test,â Grinstead said. âÂÂShe was a nice dog while she was here.âÂÂ
