CSU gives Lubick five-year extension

? Colorado State coach Sonny Lubick agreed to a new $2.5 million, five-year contract on Thursday.

The deal also includes incentive bonuses for bowl appearances and conference championships.

“We wanted to make sure the person responsible for the success was going to be here to lead the program and be a Ram for the rest of his days,” Colorado State athletic director Jeff Hathaway said. “We have that piece in place now.”

Since Lubick’s arrival in 1993, the Rams have gone 82-37, including 8-2 this season. The team is currently ranked No. 24.

Hathaway spoke with Lubick, who was in the final year of a five-year contract, last summer about an extension.

“The process was an easy negotiation and perhaps discussion is a better word. Simply put, it was an acceptance of Sonny’s proposal,” Hathaway said.

Lubick’s .695 winning percentage is the best in school history. Only Harry Hughes (125) has more wins.

“We knew that there would be a chance we could turn things around,” Lubick said. “Even though we’ve had some tough and difficult times along the way, our highlights and good times have outnumbered the difficult times three, four and fivefold.”

During Lubick’s nine seasons, the Rams have had six bowl invitations, winning three of the games. His teams posted wins against Missouri in the 1997 Holiday Bowl, Louisville in the 2000 Liberty Bowl and North Texas in the 2001 New Orleans Bowl.

And between 1994 and 2000, Colorado State won or shared five conference titles.

“I guess the thing that gives me the most pride is that people know who Colorado State is now,” said Lubick who was named the school’s 15th head football coach on Dec. 21, 1992, replacing Earle Bruce.
