Area athletes of the week

Andrew Pyle

Eudora

Class: Senior

Sport: Football

The week: Pyle’s been the focal point of the Cardinals’ offense all season, and last week was no exception. The running back carried the ball 50 times for 252 yards in a 21-7 victory against Mill Valley for the district title last Thursday, and another 17 times for 101 yards and two touchdowns in a 21-14 win against Baldwin on Tuesday in the first round of the 4A playoffs.

Comment: “We think Andrew’s a great back and we’re going to give hm the ball and see what he can do,” Cardinals coach Gregg Webb said. “He’s our horse.”

Erica Ogle

Baldwin

Class: Junior

Sport: Cross country

The week: Ogle’s fourth-place finish at the 4A state cross country meet in Wamego last Saturday led the way for the Baldwin girls’ team to snag its first-ever state title. Ogle, who covered the two-mile course in 12:12, knew before the race that she’d have to lead the way, making the title that much sweeter.

Comment: “Somewhere along the way she was talking about being the first to win a state title,” Bulldogs coach Mike Spielman said. “She just ran a great race. She did a great job as a leader. She’s got a lot of experience running on that course.”
