Transition team ready to move

? It’s not every day a new governor starts moving into the Capitol.

On Wednesday, just hours after Democrat Kathleen Sebelius defeated Republican Tim Shallenburger, the governor-elect’s staff was rattling doors and trying locks to occupy offices that will serve as the incoming administration’s transitional base before the Jan. 13 inauguration.

Among those lined up to play key roles in the transition and the future Sebelius administration are two Lawrence residents. They are Kathy Greenlee, 42, who will serve as Sebelius’ chief of staff, and Jeremy Anderson, 29, who will be in charge of policy and governmental affairs.

Both served key roles with Sebelius at the Kansas Department of Insurance and on her campaign.

Sebelius also named Nicole Corcoran-Basso, 31, as her public information officer, and Joyce Allegrucci, 59, as leader of the transition effort.

The transition offices are across and down the hall from the office of outgoing Gov. Bill Graves, a Republican who was prohibited by term limits from seeking a third term.

Throughout the next two months, Sebelius and her key advisers will work closely with Graves, gathering information on the budget and being briefed by Cabinet secretaries. State lawmakers have allocated about $100,000 for the transition.

The offices Sebelius and staff will occupy were formerly offices of the secretary of state and Department of Administration.

But those agencies have moved to other buildings, and the vacant rooms had been used recently for legislative committee meetings and news conferences.

In a photo opportunity with Sebelius, Graves said he expected a smooth transition.

“I can assure you that everyone on my staff is prepared to be of assistance, and to the extent that you would like them to stay out of the way, they are prepared to do that as well,” Graves said.

Earlier in the day, Sebelius received a briefing on security matters and was assigned state bodyguards.

In a news conference Wednesday, Sebelius said she had made no decisions on who will serve in her Cabinet, except to say that her running mate, John Moore, will serve as both lieutenant governor and secretary of commerce and housing.
